|The Cardinal Ritter Raiders could not take advantage of early foul trouble and fall to the Broad Ripple High School Rockets by a score of 72-60.Part of the Indianapolis City Tournament, the Raiders traveled to Broad Ripple High School for an early consolation game. From the tip, both teams seemed a little sluggish in all facets of the game. With the help of offensive rebounds, Broad Ripple jumped out to an early lead, but three Rockets already recorded 2 fouls in the first couple of minutes. The Raiders made a run behind Zach Hoereth’s charge, drives to the rim and a long ball, while Matt Bayler dished out a team high 6 assists. At the end of one, the Rockets lead 19-15.
With some foul trouble of their own, Damon Alford came off the bench and providing a spark, hitting the offensive boards, forcing turnovers and scoring 5 points in the quarter alone. Hoereth also picked up the Raiders draining two long balls, and scoring a game high 16 points. However, the Rockets forced some turnovers and converted easy layups to take a 33-28 lead into halftime.
Cardinal Ritter came out of the locker room hesitant and only recorded 8 third quarter points, Nick Jones scoring half of them. With the help of poor Raider shooting, 27% from behind the arc and 40% from the field, the Rockets built their lead up to 13 and seemed in control of the game.
With the lead continuing to grow, Coach Bitting called a timeout and tried to energize the team to battle back. Following, the Raiders forced a half-dozen turnovers leading to CJ Taylor’s three layups, Alfords two buckets and Hoereth’s 5 points. Cardinal Ritter cut the lead to 7 with 2 minutes to go, but the Rockets calmed down and ended the game strong behind Roberson and Leschot, recording 13 points each, and 13 total in the quarter between the two of them. With a couple key misses from the Raiders and converted free throws by Broad Ripple, the Rockets won by a dozen.
Looking forward, the Raiders try to slow down the Park Tudor Panthers this coming Tuesday night at Cardinal Ritter High School. The Junior Varsity is set to tip off at 6:00pm, with the Varsity game to follow.
