Multiple Teams · Boys Basketball Falls Short In Season Opener

The Cardinal Ritter Raiders Boys Basketball team showed a lot of promise in their season opener against the Brebeuf Braves but came up just short with a final score of 67-75 on Tuesday night. It was a back and forth game that saw several lead changes throughout the first 3 periods, but a late 3rd quarter run by The Braves sealed the deal.  The Raiders went into halftime trailing 35-37, but responded with an 8-0 run early in the 3rd to take momentum of the contest, however costly Raider turnovers sparked a 20-5 Braves run that the Raiders could not bounce back from.  The Raiders fought hard in the 4th, but weren’t able to get it any closer than 6 points in the final period.

The Raiders saw strong performances from several players. Leading the charge was Sophomore Nate Soltis’ scoring and rebounding effort.  Soltis finished with a double double with 19 points and 12 rebounds.  Senior Anthony Dumes (14 points, 4 assist), and Junior Shelby Turner (13 points), also finished with double figures for The Raiders. Turner was also very active on the glass finishing with 11 rebounds of his own to join Soltis with a double double on the night.   The Raiders were big on the glass all night finishing the game with 16 offensive rebounds which accounted for 23 2nd chance points for Ritter.

Also contributing for The Raiders were Junior Miles Tracy (9 points, 5 rebounds, 1 block), Bobby Bell (8 points, 4 rebounds), and Tharran Cook (4 points, 6 rebounds, 1 block).

The JV Raiders opened up their season with a 56-49 win over Brebeuf.  Key contributors for Ritter were the sophomore duo of Dan Bayler with 12, and Joey Gruber added 10.

Raiders Coach Ron Moore was pleased with his team’s effort, and is confident that the tough schedule will help his team moving forward.   “Scheduling a team as good as Brebeuf this early in the season shows us where we are, and where we need to improve”, says Moore.  “The good thing is we are still missing key contributors from last season that will help in the areas we struggled in tonight.”  Moore said this referring to the handful of football players who will join the team after they compete for a state championship on Friday, November 25, at 12pm.

The Raiders should be at full strength when they travel to Indy Met to take on the Pumas on December 2nd.  JV will kick off the evening at 6pm, and Varsity will follow at 730.  Come out and support the Raiders!
