The 2016-17 Cardinal Ritter Boys Basketbal Season was one of big growth for the program. For the first year in schools history Freshman, JV, and Varsity all finished with winning records. This is a big accomplishment for the program considering that this happened while playing a very difficult 3A schedule. The Raiders will miss the impact of our 4 seniors ( Jalen Adams, Bobby Bell, Anthony Dumes, Drew Sandifer), but return a lot of youth on Varsity, along with a strong JV and Freshman team. The future is bright for The Raiders!
The Raiders JV team had an amazing season finishing with a record of 23-2, a new school record for JV wins. The JV Raiders started off the season 14-0 before losing their first game in the championship game of the JV City Tournament. The JV Raiders did not just win, they dominated their competition night in and night out.
The Varsity team finished with a record of 15-9, with seven of those losses being by eight points or less. The Raiders finished the season top 50 (regardless of class) in Points Per Game (66.8 PPG), and average margin of victory with a +11.17 differential. Both of which are new records for the basketball program. The Raiders had a balanced attack with four players averaging double figure scoring on the season. Leading the way was Sophomore Nate Solits with 15.6 PPG, Juniors Shelby Turner (10.9), Miles Tracy (10.4), and Senior Anthony Dumes also chipped in 10.4 PPG.
Soltis and Turner became the first duo of Raiders to make the all ICC conference team since the 08-09 season. Soltis selected to 3rd team All CIty team, making him the first sophomore in the Boy’s Basketball program to receive this honor. Turner was a few votes shy of joining Soltis on the All-City Team earning him a Honorable Mention nod.
The Raiders wrapped up the 2016-17 season with Winter Award Night on March 14. Senior Drew Sandifer took home several awards on the night winning the Mental Attitude, and Scholar Athlete Awards. Sandifer also joined Juniors Brad Bacon, and Shelby Turner on The Academic All ICC Conference team. Senior Anthony Dumes won the Senior Leadership award, and Junior Miles Tracy was rewarded Most Improved Player. Sophomore Nate Soltis, and Junior Shelby Turner were voted Co MVP’s by their teammates.
With The Raiders returning 87% of their scoring, and 93% of this year’s rebounding in the 2017-18 season its hard to not be excited for the future. “When you factor in all we have returning on the Varsity level with our success at the younger levels it makes you very optimistic for next season,” says 3rd year coach Ron Moore.

Here is another highlight video put together by CRHS senior Aaron Lynch:
The Raiders played their final game against Beech Grove in the second round of the IHSAA Sectional. Below are the highlights of that game.
Senior Anthony Dumes scored 23 points, but this was not enough as Cardinal Ritter Raiders fell to Beech Grove Hornets 79-60. Although the Raiders outshined Beech Grove during the second half of the game, it wasn’t enough to reverse Beech Grove’s strong first half. Beech Grove went into halftime with a 40-16 lead, that proved to be too much for the Raiders to overcome.
Dumes did all he could to overcome the deficit, making 44% (8-for-18) of shots attempted. He also connected on six three point field goals in the 2nd half. His contribution helped to narrow the Hornets lead to 12 late in the 4th quarter. Nate Soltis hit three three-pointers and finished with 15 points total. Also chipping in for the Raiders were Miles Tracy (8 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks), Ange Gnamkey (6 points, 4 rebounds, 3 blocks), Tharran Cook (4 points, 3 rebounds). Soltis was a big defensive contributor as well, racking up six rebounds, two steals and two blocks. With this loss the Raiders season came to an end with a record of 15-9 on the season. This was the Raiders first winning season since 08-09, and the 4th overall in the last 40 years.
