The Cardinal Ritter baseball team won its 6th straight game on Tuesday defeating the Beech Grove Hornets 4-0. The Raiders long weekend showed early as the Raiders looked sluggish in the opening. The Raiders still pulled out the win behind a gem by Brian “Nails” Bacon and a hoovering defense. The Raiders have stayed at a #4 ranking in 2A in the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association Poll but have climbed to #2 in 2A and #13 overall in the Maxpreps poll.
Bacon was magnificent throwing a complete game shutout giving up only 3 hits, no runs, and only 1 walk while striking out 6. He was aided by the defense that had no errors led by Alex “The Sticky Bandit” Vela who had 4 assists and anchored the defense up the middle. Ben “The Jet” Egenolf made several plays in foul territory for outs and finished with 3 putouts and 1 assist.
The offense was good but poor base running ended a lot of chances for the Raiders to put together long rallies and score. At the plate Vela was the leader going 3 for 4 and was the lone bright spot on the bases, causing havoc and swiping 2 bags. Blake “Hot Mustard” Malatestinic went 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI and had a great approach at the plate. Jake “The Snake” Kluemper went 1-3 and fought off two awful early at bats to hit a laser into center late in the game. Egenolf and Henry “Napalm” Woodcock also had hits on the day.
The JV Silver team also played it’s best game of the season this year behind a more focused defense. Gus Esterline had a great outing, pitching 5 innings and letting in 3 runs. Dan Baylor closed the game striking out 5 batters in two innings. The bats came alive in the 7th inning, driving in 8 runs with huge hits from Ben McCall and Joey Wynn.
The Raiders look to continue their winning ways on Wednesday as they take on the rival Speedway Spark Plugs on senior night. Senior festivities will begin at 5:00 with the first pitch coming at 5:30.
