The Cardinal Ritter boys volleyball team participated in the Open Division of the Carmel Tournament on Saturday. The open division included 9 of the top 11 teams in the state and the Raiders were seeded 8th in the 9-team tournament. The Raiders went 2-2 on the day, finishing 5th. The Raiders lost to #2 Carmel High School 2-1 (20-25, 25-21,14-16) and to #7 Fishers High School 2-0 (15-25, 14-25). The Raiders got wins over #3 Cathedral 2-0 (25-18, 25-18) and #6 Lafayette Jefferson 2-1 (25-22, 21-25, 15-12). This brings the team’s overall record to 18-7.
As has been the case all season, the team’s defensive play was outstanding most of the day. The Raiders had an amazing 225 digs throughout the tournament. Josh Strati led all defenders with 66 digs, Cade Merrill had 43 digs, setter Will Roberts had 35, Griffin Koester had 31 and Matthew Walters had 21. The team netted 19 blocks on the day, with W. Roberts, Eric Krumm and Tharran Cook each getting 5 blocks.
From the service line the Raiders served a respectable 92% with most servers missing no more than 1 or 2 serves over the course of all 4 matches. As a team, the Raiders had 10 aces with Merrill picking up 5 and Koester getting 3. W. Roberts had 77 assists and 7 kills on the day. He connected with 8 different hitters. Krumm led the team in kills with 36, Cook had 13, Sean Bennett had 11, Lucas Roberts had 10, Michael Isakson had 7, Josh Christian had 6, Merrill had 3 and Koester had 2. Krumm’s 36 kills were from 83 attempts with 7 errors for a .349 hitting percentage, Cook and Bennett hit .215 and .210, respectively.
