In first round action of the Varsity Metro Tourney on Tuesday, the Cardinal Ritter boys volleyball team took on Brownsburg High School and came away with a straight set victory 2-0 (25-19, 25-18). Cade Merrill was very effective from the service line going a perfect 11-11 with 3 aces, Matthew Walters and Josh Strati also had an ace this evening. Will Roberts dished out 19 assists, Eric Krumm earned 8 kills, Michael Isakson had 7 kills, Josh “JC” Christian had 3 and Tharran Cook had 2. Sean Bennett led the team in blocks with 3, Krumm had 2 blocks and Cook had 1. Strati led the team in digs, picking up 11, Griffin Koester had 10, W. Roberts had 7 and Matthew Walters had 5.
In the second round match, the Varsity Raiders were also matched up against the host team, Noblesville High School and lost in straight sets 0-2 (11-25, 25-27). After a very lackluster first set, the Raiders pulled it together and made the Millers from Noblesville work for every point they earned. The defense got very stingy in set two, picking up 24 of the total 38 digs in set two. Strati had 12 of those digs, Krumm had 8 and W. Roberts had 5. Once again, Bennett had 3 blocks, while Krum had 2 and Cook had 1.This match it was W. Roberts who was effective from the service line, going 11-11 with 1 ace. The kills were very divided among seven players, Krumm had 5, JC had 3, Cook had 2, Merrill, Koester, Bennett, and Isakson each had 1.
The JV Metro Tournament was also held in four locations across the city on Tuesday. The JV Raiders were playing at Noblesville High School. In their first match of the evening, they played Brownsburg High School and won 2-1 (25-19, 24-25, 15-13). In the Brownsburg match, Patrick Keating was the kill leader with 5, followed by John Wagoner and Bobby Sulecki with 4 each, getting 2 kills each were Elliot Domogalik, Bobby Isakson, Andrew Harvey and Zane Middaugh. On the defensive side of the ball, John Wagoner had one block. Austin Hicks led the team in digs picking up 15, David Eisele had 10 digs, Bobby Isakson had 6 digs and Michael Kozlowski had five.
In second round action tonight, the JV Raiders matched up against the host team, Noblesville. After a poor showing in set 1, the team managed to get itself back on track and pull out the win 2-1 (12-25, 25-21, 15-12). Unfortunately, since the JV and Varsity were playing at the same time, there are no stats available for this match. Nonetheless, the JV Raiders advance to next round of the tournament, which will be held at Cathedral High School on Thursday night. The first match is a 5:30 start.
Tuesday’s results bring the overall varsity record to 20-8. The last regular season match for the Varsity Raiders is Wednesday night against Covenant Christian. JV match starts at 6 with Varsity to follow. It is also Senior Night. We will be honoring Griffin Koester and Lucas Roberts between the JV and Varsity match.
