The Cardinal Riter boys volleyball team made quick work of the Center Grove Trojans in the semi-final round of regionals on Saturday, winning 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-15). The Raiders were extremely efficient on both sides of the ball, playing great offense and defense. Will Roberts spread the offense very well, dishing out 27 assists to a host of Raider hitters. Eric K rumm led all hitters with 14 kills, Michael Isakson added 6, Tharran Cook had 5 and Josh “JC” Christian had 4. W. Roberts helped his own offensive cause by also getting 4 kills. As a team the Raiders had 12 blocks, Krumm had 6 of them and Cook added another 4. Josh Strati picked up 19 digs, Griffin Koester had 14 and Cade Merrill had 11 digs. From the service line, W. Roberts was a perfect 19-19 with 1 aces, Matthew Walters earned 4 aces in the morning match.
Next, the team faced Southport in the regional championship match and came up short in their effort to prolong their season another week with a trip to state. The Raiders lost to the Cardinals 1-3 (25-19, 23-25, 22-25, 26-28). The Raiders stayed closed in each set, but after the first set, it just wasn’t quite enough to get another win. As it has been all season, the defense played an incredible match. Josh Strati led all defenders with 36 digs, Merrill added 19 digs, Koester 14 and W. Roberts had 10. Krumm and Cook continued to lead the team in blocks picking up 3 solo blocks and 4 assisted blocks each. W. Roberts had 30 assists in the afternoon match, connecting with Cook for 12 kills, Sean Bennett for 9 kills, Krumm for 8, Michael Isakson 6 and “JC” for 3. W. Roberts went 25-26 from the service line with 2 aces, while Merrill was 21-23 also with 2 aces.
The brings the 2017 Boys Volleyball season to an end. The Varsity team finished the year with an overall record of 22-9.
