The Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams competed in the 2017 IHSAA Sectional Championship on Saturday morning. In one of the toughest Sectionals in the state, the Girls Team ran exceptionally, placing 5th and advancing to the Regional Championship this coming Saturday. The Boys Team also ran well, but unfortunately, did not advance to the Regionals.
The Lady Raiders were led by Mary Anna Wehrle who placed 3rd overall leading nearly 4K’s. Joining her on the podium was her sister, who followed close behind at 10th behind a strong kick. Jenna Gruber ran a fantastic race narrowly missing the podium, placing 21st followed by Hannah Wells who placed 28th who blew by 6 runners in the last 300 meters in a move that is becoming the patented “Hannah Kick.” Lauryn Harcus was behind them finishing 5th for Cardinal Ritter.
Even though the Boys Team did not make the Regionals, there were some great displays of heart and determination with Connor Schepers and Mitchell Jacob finishing in the top runners not on a qualifying team. This means both individuals will advance to the Regional Championship. Peter Sperry had a gutsy performance coming in 11th overall while Eli Bush and Wes Kochell also were close to the 10th spot.
Coach Ford was quoted saying, “The stars of the meet are Mitchell for making it to Regionals… and Mary Anna… for placing 3rd in a very strong field which had 7 runners with PRs less than 18:59.”
