The Raiders moved up one spot in last week’s Coaches Poll from #9 to #8 and picked up a big win at home against Southport 3-1 (25-11, 25-21, 24-26, 25-16). It is the first time in program history that the Raiders have gotten a win over the Cardinals, it was the eighth meeting for the two teams. Southport prepared well for thes match-up as they focused on shutting down the offensive production of the Raider Middle Hitters. But, the Raider Pin Hitters were up to the challenge, and for the first time all season, they out-hit the Middles by more than a 3-1 ratio and kept their errors to a minimum. Clutch serving through-out the night and spectacular defensive plays, especially down the stretch in set 4, all contributed to the big win.
Will Roberts dished out 40 assists as the Raiders picked up 45 kills on the night. Josh “JC” Christian led the team in kills with 16 on the night. Ben “The Jet” Egenolf and Eric “Cookie” Krumm each had 7, Mike Isakson and Sean Bennett had 4 a piece, Cade Merrill contributed 3, Tharran “T-Bone” Cook had 2, and Josh Strati and Roberts each had 1 kill. Five hitters finished the night with hitting percentages above .270 and they were Merrill at .428, Egenolf at .357, Christian at .333, Krumm at .315 and Isakson at .272. The net play of the Raiders was fruitful on the defensive side of the ball, as the team had 12 assisted blocks and two solo blocks on the night. Cook led the team in blocks with 4 in total, while Christian added 3 in total.
Strati led the team in digs on the night, getting 21 for the match, including a flurry of them very late in set 4. Roberts picked up 17 digs, Merrill had 14, Matthew Walters and Krumm each added 8 digs. The Raiders looked great from the service line tonight, missing only 5 serves the entire match. Walters and Krumm both upped their serving game tonight as Walters went 24/25 with 4 aces and Krumm was a perfect 19/19 with 1 ace.
The JV Raiders improved their record to 8-2 with a 2-0 (25-22, 25-18) win over Southport. The JV Raiders found themselves down by as many as 6 points, early in set 1. They managed to tie the score at 12 and then went point for point with Southport until Elliot Domogalik went back to serve with the score tied at 17 and delivered 3 aces in a row. Those aces proved to be the margin of victory in set 1. The Raiders had an easier time getting the win in set 2. Michael Kozlowski had 14 assists on the night, his favorite target was Bobby Sulecki who finished the night with 7 kills, Bobby Isakson, Patrick Keating and Elliot Domogalik all added 3 kills each, and John Wagoner had 1 kill. Keating also finished with 4 total blocks tonight. Domogalik and Stephen Starsiak had 1 block each. Zane Middaugh led he defense with 16 digs, Kozlowski picked up 10 digs, Mark Adolay had 6 digs, and in his return to the court after a couple of weeks off due to an injury, Ben Yetter had 5 digs on the night.
The Raiders want to be sure and give a special “shout-out” to all of the Grandparents in attendance at the match. We had more than 40 grandparents in attendance on the evening and we hope they enjoyed the matches.
