The Raiders Boys Volleyball Team celebrated Senior Night with a win over Covenant Christian 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-20). In addition to Senior Night festivities, the match was also the final match of the Indy Metro Conference for boys’ volleyball. The Raiders finished conference play undefeated and are very excited to add a boys volleyball trophy to the trophy case at Cardinal Ritter High School.
The Raiders recognized 12 seniors on the night. Managers Cici Koester, Emma Grider and Callie Waites in addition to players Ben “The Jet” Egenolf, Sean “Dean” Bennett, Mike “Iron Man” Isakson, Tharran “T-Bone” Cook, Charlie “Masterful” Magan, Matthew “Walloping” Walters, Eric “Cookie” Krumm, Will “The Thrill” Roberts and Josh Strati “Sphere”. The Raiders welcomed Krumm and Strati back to the court, after missing two matches last week due to injury. Junior, Cade Merrill was in the libero jersey as Strati, who isn’t quite back to 100% yet, played a little back row for Josh “JC” Christian. With nine senior players, it was not possible to start all of the seniors, nor was it possible to end the match with all of the seniors on the bench. Instead, Coach Strati opted to finish the last few points of the match with Magan, Walters, Krumm, Roberts and Strati all on the court. These five players have been with the program all four years of their high school career, the same length of time the program has been in existence. The last couple of points were a bit nerve-wracking and took a little longer than they should have, but considering the team finished the match with Strati and Magan in the front row and Krumm in the back row they took the W and called it a night.
Roberts had 25 assists tonight as he very evenly spread the offense around to all six of his hitters. Leading the team in kills were Cook and Christian with 7 each, followed by Egenolf with 5, Krumm and Isakson with 4 each, Bennett with 3, Roberts and Strati each had 1 kill. The Raiders put up a massive blocking presence and collected 11 blocks as a team, Krumm led the blocking with 4, Cook and Roberts each added 2, while Isakson, Egenolf and Christian had 1 a-piece. From the service line Walters was a perfect 11-11, Cook went 4-4, while Roberts had 4 aces, and Merrill and Strati each had 1 ace. Merrill led the team in digs picking up 21, Roberts added 16, Walters had 7, Magan, Cook and Egenolf each had 2, while Isakson, Krumm and Strati had 1 a-piece. Serve receive looked pretty good. Strati and Merrill combined for 23 of 26, 3-option passes – Strati was 8-8 and Merrill was 15-18.
The JV Raiders also got the win against Covenant Christian this 2-1 (24-25, 25-16, 15-12). Michael Kozlowski and Zane Middaugh shared some the setting responsibilities tonight, Kozlowski picked up 12 assists and Middaugh had 4. Bobby Sulecki and Patrick Keating each finished the night with 6 kills and no errors, Elliot Domogalik had 3 kills, Kozlowski had 2 kills, while Bobby Isakson, Stephen Starsiak and Middaugh each had 1 kill. From the service line, Middaugh was a perfect 15/15 with 2 aces, Domogalik was 11/11 with 1 ace and Sulecki was 10/10. Tonight marked the final match for the JV season. Ben Yetter and Middaugh each had 10 digs in the match, Mark Adolay had 9, Domogalik and Sulecki each had 8 digs, David Eisele had 6 digs, Eric Diaz and Kozlowski had 5 digs each, while Keating and Starsiak had 2 digs a-piece. There was only one block stat for the match, and it went to Keating. Fortunately, it was a memorable block, as it was for match point. This marked the JV Raiders last match of the season, they finished with a record of 13-4.
The Varsity team starts post season play on Saturday in the 4-team Brebeuf Regional. Cardinal Ritter plays Lawrence North in the second game of the morning round, at approximately 11:30a. The championship match will start at 3p. Hope to see you there.
