Jenna “Pure Athlete” Purichia was named the 2018 City Athlete of the Year. Jenna starred in three sports in her career at Cardinal Ritter over the span of her 4 years. She joins her aunt Katie (Murphy) Waggoner and her brother Jake as being only 12 members of Cardinal Ritter that have received this honor. She was the first female athlete from Cardinal Ritter to be named City AOTY in 10 years and is now 1 of only 4 Lady Raiders that is a member of the club. She has lived up to her nickname through the years and will now be solidified as one of the greatest athletes the Raiders have ever had.
What separates Jenna from the rest of the top athletes in the area is her dedication to academics and service learning. Earlier in the year Jenna was named the 2018 MCCGSA City Scholar Athlete of the Year because of her high academic achievement in addition to her athletic ability. She sports a 4.16 GPA all while playing 3 sports at Cardinal Ritter, playing on a club volleyball team, getting up early in the morning before school to workout and donating her time to help others.
In volleyball, Purichia holds the season record for digs with an astounding 597. A feat she accomplished her junior year. She was one of the highest regarded volleyball players in the state as she was named to the 2016 and 2017 MCCGSA All-City Teams as well as the All-Indiana Crossroads Conference Team. This past year she was also named to the 2017 ICGSA Academic All-State Honorable Mention Team. She was able to lead the Raiders to a Sectional Championship her Junior year. She was also nominated to the North-South All-Star Tryout.
In Basketball, “Pure Athlete” showed off her athletic prowess as she was the catalyst on both offense and defense. She was always a factor in every game on both sides of the court because of her desire to succeed. Many of the her “hustle plays” don’t show up in the score book, but she seemed to always be on the right side of a tipped or loose ball, was a tenacious defender, was a monster on the glass and was deadly from the 3 point corners of the court. For her hard work she was named to the 2018 MCCGSA All-City Tournament Team. She was also named to the ICC All-Conference Team as well as the All-Academic All-Conference Team. She was also instrumental in the team winning the school’s first 3A Sectional Championship this year.
One could argue that even with her resumes in volleyball and basketball, softball is the sport that comes most natural and Jenna is best at. She has torn up the softball scene since stepping foot on the field as a freshman. She has been a star center fielder, shortstop and has also toed the rubber for the Lady Raiders. All while hitting at an elite level. She has been named to the 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 All-MCCGSA All-City Team, the 2016, 2017 and 2018 All-ICC Team and the ICC All-Academic Team in 2017 and 2018. She was also recently voted on to the 2018 North-South All-Star Team and will have the opportunity to play in the tournament series in July.
After contemplating her future and opportunities of playing multiple sports at colleges across the Midwest, Purichia ultimately decided to play volleyball next year at DePauw University.
