On Tuesday, September 4th The Lady Raiders Volleyball Program traveled to Roncalli for freshman, JV and varsity games. All three teams would end up losing, but not without putting up a fierce fight.
The Roncalli Rebels are always a tough team to beat and this year they were particularly good, ranked 22nd in the state of Indiana. Roncalli averages 10.8 kills per set, a hitting percentage of .291, 89 blocks, 19.9 digs, and 93 serving aces. The Lady Raiders knew it would be a tough game, but were determined to give it their all anyways. Our very own Raider Volleyball Team has some impressive stats with an average 8.3 kills per set, .123 hitting average, 39 blocks, 16.9 digs per set, and 87 serving aces, but would sadly fall short on this particular evening.
The freshman team came out swinging, but struggled in serve/receive which caused them to lose a tough match. In volleyball, you must win the serve-receive game if you want to win the match at all and with the tough serves from the Rebels and the lady raiders struggling from the service line, the feat proved too much. The freshman Raiders attempted to battle back in the 2nd set, but were unfortunately outmatched.
The JV lady raiders played their hardest the first set, losing by just a few points. The girls were even winning by 10-6 at one point, but after a strategic timeout by the Rebels, Roncalli began to take the lead. The Lady Raiders got stuck in a few rotations and lost momentum as the Lady Rebels began to score more points. After losing a tight first set, they headed into the second set and sadly lost.
Going into the match, the Varsity players knew they were going to have to put up a fight. They claimed to know how good Roncalli would be, but did not truly wake up until after losing the first set 25-13. The second set was also a tough loss, as the team got stuck in multiple rotations and the aces from the Lady Rebels seemed never ending. However, going into the 3rd set after just losing two straight sets, Coach Triplet attempted to fire up the girls saying that she did not care if they won by that they weren`t “playing like themselves”. This seemed to finally wake up the team as they came out ready to play in the third set and had a very close game with Roncalli. Even though the Raiders ended up losing 25-18, they were much more satisfied with their play after that last set. While Roncalli put up a big block, senior, Grace Armbruster still managed to lead the team in kills, as she has most of the season. Senior setter, Mariclaire Warnock had 11 assists, and junior DS Linsey “Say Hey” Waggoner led the team with 20 digs.
After the game, Grace Armbruster was asked about how she felt the team played and she responded, “We got off to a slow start in the beginning, but we rallied back in the third set to play our game. Unfortunately, we couldn’t come out on top this time.”
The team seems hopeful to bounce back from this loss quickly as they are back in action on Thursday, September 6th at home against Heritage Christian.
