Multiple Teams · Volleyball Senior Night; Win First Round Of City

By Linsey Waggoner

On Wednesday, September 26th, The Lady Raiders Volleyball Program hosted the Brownsburg Bulldogs at home for a senior night extravaganza. The evening kicked off with the freshman team at 5 pm. The Freshman Team went into the game not knowing what to expect and ended up winning the firs set with scrappy play and tough defense. Cardinal Ritter ended up losing a close second set and then losing the third set, giving the victory to the Bulldogs. However, it was a well played game by the Lady Raiders and included some high points. Tahja Brown had 3 aces and 4 kills, Abby Blastic had 10 assists, and Natalie Kutcher led the team in digs.

The JV Raiders also played a hard fought game against the bulldogs. Even though they lost in two sets, both games were close and included lots of hustle plays and both good defense and offense from the raiders. Emma Mckee (sophomore) led the team with 2 aces while Maggie Cmehil (sophomore) had an outstanding defensive game with 18 digs.

Before the Varsity game could begin, CRHS Volleyball took the time to honor their six seniors: Grace Arm”And Hammer” bruster, Maria Carson, Grace “Breaking” Hart(s)man, Cristina Troll, “MC” Mariclaire Warnock, and Abbey Webb. There was not a dry eye from any of the players or coaches as everyone in the gym could see how much these seniors would be missed not only on the court, but off of it as well. These six girls have played together since freshman year, a few of them have even been playing together since grade school and we would like to thank them for their many years dedicated to Cardinal Ritter Volleyball.

After senior night concluded, it was time for the seniors to dry their tears and play the game they loved for the last time on their home court. All six seniors started on the court and played positions they never had before. The Raiders were even ahead of the Bulldogs in this weird rotation. Webb (senior) served and played defense, which is not normal for her as a middle hitter, and she dug all the balls hit her way and even had a few aces. Hartman (senior) who is a back row player, also known as a DS, got to hit in the front row and had a few kills.  Although the girls lost in the first set, it was an exciting game to be a part of.

The energy carried into the second set even though the Raiders were now running a regular rotation. The team played hard, but came up short 25-21. The third set was not near as exciting as the first two, with the team losing big to give the Bulldogs their third victory of the night. Furthermore, it was an exhilarating game with screaming parents, a rowdy student section, and raiders playing with a whole lot of heart.

The Lady Raiders then went into the City Tournament and took on Howe High School coming away with a 3-0 win in three straight sets 25-8, 25-7, 25-12.

The Raiders shared the wealth on offense having four girls with 5 or more kills. Armbruster and Kelsey Waggoner lead the Raiders with 13 and 10 kills respectively, while Webb and Troll each added 5 kills. The Raiders were also very aggressive from the serving line with five girls having 3 or more aces.  Warnock chalked up 4 aces while Megan Van Gheem, Christina Troll, Amy “A Peez-Zee” Price, and Kelsey “Say Hey” Waggoner each had 3 aces.  Warnock and Van Gheem were responsible for spreading the offense tonight earning 20 and 18 assists each.

The Lady Raiders are back in action Tuesday at Scecina for the second round of the City Tourney.
