The Cardinal Ritter Boys Soccer Team traveled to Chatard Monday night for a rematch against the Tri-West Bruins for the first round of sectional play. Things started off well for the Raiders, who went on the attack early and looked to have control of the game. It payed off about 15 minutes in when Ryan “High Press” Hofer beat the keeper on a free kick from 25 yards out. Cardinal Ritter kept the pressure up and looked to be on their way to extending their lead when they had a man sent off with a red card before the 20 minute mark. From that point on, the Raiders found themselves in a much more even match, as they were only allowed 10 men on the field, but were able to take their 1-0 lead into halftime, thanks to a strong defensive effort.
The Bruins came out in the second half with a much more aggressive approach, trying to tie the game with their numbers advantage, but struggled to control the midfield because “The Law Firm of Hofer, Hofer and Hofer” would not back down. Aaron “Hollywood” and Ryan Hofer’s showed their endless endurance.
Despite playing without a forward, Cardinal Ritter found a way to keep Tri West on their heels and had a few close opportunities to extend their lead. The defense continued to play well throughout the half, and Hayden “Grinder” Grider was there to shut down any attack that got too close to goal. The Raiders would close the game out with a 1-0 victory to move on to the second round of sectionals.
