Boys Varsity Soccer · #6 Soccer Loses Heart Breaker In City Finals

The Cardinal Ritter Boys Soccer Team traveled to Bishop Chatard to take on the Cathedral Irish for the City Tournament Final. The Raiders looked strong at the start with a majority of the possession and lots of ball movement as they tried to break down the Cathedral defense that was dropping 9 players back to clog up the passing lanes. Despite a few nice looks, the Irish would be the first on the scoreboard 20 minutes in after an unfortunate deflection set up a good look at the top of the box. Cardinal Ritter wouldn’t be discouraged by the deficit and they stepped up their play to try and even the score. With 6 minutes remaining, Luke Lauer found the back of the net on a beautiful header that was set up on a free kick from Andy “Bend It Like” Bonilla. The teams would go into halftime knotted up at 1-1.

With the game tied, the intensity continued to build with each minute that passed as neither team was able to pull ahead. Cardinal Ritter looked like the more dominant team through the first 20 minutes of the half and had multiple opportunities to take lead, but were stifled by the Cathedral keeper each time. Around the 10 minute mark, Cardinal Ritter had their best opportunity to score when Bonilla was fouled in the box, but once again the Irish keeper made a huge save to keep them in the game. Shortly after, Cathedral would capitalize on one of their few opportunities in the second half to go up 2-1, a lead they would hold onto until the end of the match.
