The Cardinal Ritter Boys Basketball program dominated the 2nd half of the opening game against Speedway to pick a win in the opening game of Sectional 28. The Raiders however were unable to carry that momentum into the semi-finals and lost to conference foe Beech Grove to end the 2019-20 season.
Cardinal Ritter opened up the Sectional with a 72-54 win over Speedway. The Raiders got off to a slow start in this contest but used a 17-4 run to end the 3rd quarter that put the game away. Leading the Raiders was Damon “Old Oak” Ogletree, Jr with 28 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore “Lion” Zion Williams added 16 points and 7 assist, and Jordan Turner finished the game with 12 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assist and 3 steals.
With the win vs Speedway the Raiders moved on to play Beech Grove. Cardinal Ritter had just dropped a heartbreaker to the Hornets two weeks prior in a 74-75 loss at home. The game started off tight with both teams struggling to score, however the momentum took a turn with Raiders big man, Ogletree, picked up his 2nd foul just 2 minutes into the contest. The Hornets began to pull away in the 2nd period, but timely buckets by the scrappy sophomore Turner, and key free throws by sophomore Austin Sultzer cut the Hornet lead to 10 at half.
The Raiders responded well at the start of the 3rd period with Ogletree getting back to back buckets near the rim, but as fouls continued to mount for Ogletree the Hornets were able to pull away to a 70-43 victory. Junior Aidan Cannon led the Raiders with 14 points, Ogeltree added 8 points and 13 rebounds.
With the Raiders returning 4 out of 5 starters next season the outlook is bright to improve on this years up and down season. The Raiders are grateful for the contributions of all three of their graduating seniors Damon Ogletree, Will Sandifer, and Rodney Adams. Their leadership and on court contributions led to this group really maturing and ending the season competitively.
Coach Moore and the rest of the Raiders program would like to thank the parents, fans, all the supporters of the program this season, and look forward to celebrating the accomplishments of this year at the awards ceremony.
