It was a near perfect day for running in North Vernon Saturday morning for the Ray Gerkin Invitational hosted by Jennings County HS. It was the Cardinal Ritter Cross Country Teams’ first time participating in a fun day with mostly smaller schools. The meet was renamed for Coach Gerkin who passed away this year and coached XC at Jennings County for decades. It was a big meet as 17 teams and 266 runners competed
The boys did an outstanding job placing 3rd only losing to two top 35 teams. Paul “Stride” and Wil “Streaker” Stamm again ran a great races going 1-2. Paul broke the school record again and Wil broke his PR. Both ran away easily from an all state runner from Corydon. Or as Coach Ford said, “well they made it look easy as I know it wasn’t.”
Nicholas Mark smashed his PR by 50 seconds and more is expectation are coming for him this season as he has been looking very good in training. He placed 14th out of 161 runners.
Dom Oaldon ran a strong last mile and broke his PR as did Carson Vrabel and Billy Macleod.
Jenna “Get Up and Go” Gruber, Hannah “Kick” Wells, Sarah Jacob broke their PRs and they did again Saturday! Jenna and Hannah ran away from a strong field placing 1-2. These young ladies are running so well. Sarah Jacob is ready for a break out, she is running so well and that was evident Saturday as she was on the podium placing 7th.
Coach Ford also stated, “The Stars of the Meet are easy as for boys it was Paul Stamm. Nicholas was considered and most times would have been the star but it has to beat a runner that wins and sets a school record. For the girls it was Jenna Gruber as she won her first big meet.”
Great job Raiders!!!
