The Cardinal Ritter Girls Basketball Team has officially started the Winter Season for the Raiders playing three games and going 1 and 2 in 3 close games. They started the year off playing down at the Decatur Central Shootout, beating 4A Southport 60-44. The girls came out on fire behind the hot start of Emma “Light’s Out” Litzelman who led all scorers with 25 points on 47% shooting from the field and 67% from the 3 point line. Kelsey “Wild Card” Waggoner was right behind as she put up 17 points overall. Megan McCall “Me Maybe” had 8 and Lauren “Steamin” Beaman added 6. Beaman was a monster on the boards, pulling down 13 rebounds. Following her, and almost earning a double double with 9 was Waggoner, Jenna “Get Up and Go” Gruber added 8 and Litzelman had 6.
After that, the Lady Raiders headed up to Lebanon High School and were given some bad news right before the game that they would be shorthanded. In a back and forth first half, Waggoner and Gruber led the scoring with 6 pts and 4points apiece. Score at half was 17-17. The 3rd quarter was more of the same, back and forth. Ultimately, it was a poor night shooting from both the field (33%) and free throw line (30%). Waggoner led the way with her first double double of the season putting up 12 points and ripping down 16 boards (9 offensive). McCall was right behind her with 8 and Gruber with 7. Olivia “Wu-Tang” Webb got the start at the point and added 5 points and 8 rebounds. “Raking” Riley Heim played well with 4 points and 6 rebounds. Beaman was a defensive specialist who locked down her defender and cleaned the glass with 7 rebounds.
In the end, the Lady Raiders fell 47-36.
The JV Lady Raiders also opened their season on the road against the Lady Tigers of Lebanon High School. The Tigers employed a suffocating full court press that proved too much for the Raiders to handle. Daveigh Small scored 5 while Stella Campbell added 2 as Cardinal Ritter falls to 0-1.
Next, it was the season opener and Senior Night as Cardinal Ritter took on the Indiana Crossroads Conference rivals, Speedway. Senior night was different in this Covid era, with Litzelman, joining her senior teammates via Zoom on the big screen. The team was honored well by the Raider Nation in a sold out game.
Unfortunately, the Sparkplugs came out determined to strike early and they did. The Lady Raiders battled back, but found themselves in long droughts as the game wore on and fell 53-41.
Waggoner led the team again with her second straight double double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Gruber had double digit points with 11 and also had 9 boards. McCall had her third straight game with 8 points and added 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Webb ended with 4 points, and four assists, Heim had 2 points and 3 rebounds and Beaman again played solid defense pulling down 5 rebounds and drawing several charges.
The Lady Raiders are back in action Thursday as they head to Guerin Catholic for a varsity game only at 7:30.
