The boys volleyball team kicked off their 2021 season on Saturday, traveling to Cathedral for the Irish Hilltop Tournament. The Raiders opened with a loss (17-25, 18-25) to reigning state champions, Fishers. The Fishers offense featured tough serves and powerful hits that the Raiders struggled with early on, but the Raiders kept fighting and made the match competitive. The Raiders then faced off against tournament hosts, Cathedral, in a very competitive match. After addressing some of their issues from the previous match, the Raiders went out and secured a victory in the first set, winning 25-21. The boys struggled a bit with some tough serves in the second set, and lost 15-25. The final set was a back and forth affair with both teams fighting hard, and unfortunately Cathedral was able to pull away and secure victory in the end, 13-15. For the third and final match of the day, the Raiders faced off against Franklin Central. The boys really found their rhythm and won in straight sets (25-20, 25-13).
The results from the day were truly a team effort, with everyone contributing at different times. Some stand out performances were had by junior Dylan Poore with 20 kills, junior Patrick VanGheem with 25 assists, senior Aron Gebremskel with 3 service aces, sophomore Owen Sulecki with 6 blocks, and senior Mark Adolay with 10 digs. The Raiders are back in action on Tuesday, with a double-header at home against Avon and Ben Davis, starting at 6pm.
